TUFA is arranging a drop-in social with refreshments provided for members on the Durham campus. TUFA’s President and other officers will be on hand to chat and answer questions about the Association, TUFA’s advocacy activities, and sector-wide developments. We will send out a reminder announcement with location information nearer to the event.

2. Spring General Membership Meeting scheduled for April 17th

Please hold April 17th (2:00 to 4:00 pm) for TUFA’s Spring General Membership meeting. The event will be held in-person (with a virtual option) on the Symons campus in Bata Library, Room 411. Additional information and meeting documents will be circulated in early April.

3. CAUT Bulletin for January-February 2024

CAUT’s most recent bulletin includes a feature article “On the importance of extramural academic freedom” by CAUT’s Executive Director.

4.  Peterborough Performs – Concert at Showplace Performance Centre on March 7th (7:00 pm to 11:00 pm)

The United Way fourth annual Peterborough Performs — Musicians United to end Homelessness — fundraising concert is upon us! Tickets are only $50 and all proceeds support initiatives to address shelter insecurity in and around Peterborough. The concert will showcase 16 local musicians/bands performing on the two stages in the Showplace Performance Centre. Check out the full lineup and get your tickets by clicking here. This is an excellent opportunity to get a feel for the local music scene and maybe buy your friendly Executive Director a beer. . . .

You can also support the cause by participating in the virtual auction that closes at 10:00pm on the night of the concert.

5.  International Women’s Day Events – March 8th

March 8 is International Women’s Day. The Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre and Kawartha World Issues Centre have organized a rally and march that will start at noon in Peterborough Square. Later that day, there will be a community event at Peterborough Public Library (doors open at 4:30 pm) with light refreshments provided. These events are free, accessible and open to all community members. Registration is encouraged.

6.  CCPA Report on University funding

OCUFA’s recent conference on funding higher education included a presentation by the Director of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives-Ontario on the economics Ontario’s university sector. The report on which that presentation was based (“Back from the brink: Restoring public funding to Ontario’s universities”) explains how Ontario got to the bottom of the pack when it comes to per capita funding for higher education and offers evidence-based solutions for change.

7. OHC Report on Healthcare Privatization

On February 21st, the Ontario Health Coalition released a report on healthcare privatization entitled “Robbing the public to build the private: the Ford government’s hospital privatization scheme.” The Peterborough & District Labour Council (of which TUFA is an active member) voted at its general meeting last night to support the work of the Ontario Health Coalition with a $1,000 contribution. We expect to hear more from the Peterborough Health Coalition and will keep TUFA members informed with respect to OHC research and campaigns in support of our public healthcare system.

In Solidarity,

Marcus
