TUFA Statement on Preventing Scholasticide in Palestine
Following discussion and debate at a special meeting of the Association, a majority of those in attendance passed a motion stating that TUFA:
- calls for an immediate and complete ceasefire in Gaza, the full release of hostages held by Hamas, and the exchange of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel;
- condemns the scholasticide in Gaza and the other Occupied Palestinian Territories (West Bank and East Jerusalem); and,
- supports students’ rights to assemble and protest peacefully on campus without disruption, surveillance, reprisal or violence from police, security, or other quarters.
In furtherance of these aims, TUFA will:
- press Trent University to end any institutional ties it has to the Israeli military, defence, security, and technology sectors and corporations complicit in Israeli war crimes, breaches of international law, and human rights violations in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem;
- support Palestinian academics and educational workers through the Scholars at Risk program, as well as by seeking ways to support the eventual restoration of academic life in Gaza;
- put out a call for members who may be interested in serving on either of the committees referenced in the motion.
